The Cost of Living

Contents

In the 25th century, when megacorporations dominate the Orion Spur, living is not something one can do for free. While some can eke out a meager existence on frontier worlds where money is not needed to provide for oneself, in civilized space megacorporations squeeze everything they can out of the people, charging for as much as they can. This includes their own employees, and even on top-of-the-line ships, like the SCCV Horizon, very few things come for free to the people who work aboard.

General Pay Classes

Still need to do this but on average they are;

Struggling = Average Salary / 2

Middling = Average Salary(5850cr per month)

Alright = Average Salary x 2

Well-off = Average Salary x 4

Wealthy = Average Salary x 6

Lavish = Average Salary x 10

These are generalizations and aren't precise, a couple are inbetween.

Net Income

The following is the amount characters take on average, given a specific level that all of their wants and needs are at. ALL ESSENTIAL EXPENSES, INCLUDING FOOD, INSURANCE, CLOTHING, UTILITIES, MEDICAL EXPENSES, TAXES AND RENT, ARE FACTORED INTO THIS. If you want to tailor your characters finances in more detail, the collapsible boxes at the bottom of this page have the raw information.

Insurance

While also brought up in wants and needs, Insurance varies by plan and needs further explanation. Not everyone gets free insurance from work. Injuries are only covered through insurance or if they happen in the workplace, and can be proven NOT to have been caused by the negligence of the injuried employee. The only exception to this is the captain, who has the Idris Premium Package for free on account of their station; they are also one of the only two occupations aboard the Horizon who get insurance for free, the other being Consular Officers. Everyone else pays.

No Insurance

A costs-saver, especially for those indebted. Everything is out of pocket besides workplace accidents.

Price; Free.

Basic Insurance Package

Covers only essential appointments and treatments or appointments and treatments for chronic conditions. It is the standard package for Security, Operations, Service, and all Interns.

Price; 1620cr a month

SCC Contractor Insurance Package

Only on-duties aboard the Horizon are covered, covers most appointments and treatments, fairly generous. It is the standard package for all non-intern occupations in Engineering, Medical, Research, and Command Support.

Price; 2700cr a month

Idris Premium Insurance Package

Where you're set insurance-wise, for all intents and purposes covers everything. It is the standard package used for calculations with Command.

Price; 6300cr a month

Housing Aboard the Horizon

The Horizon offers a wide array of housing options for the crew, and the SCC assigns members of the Horizon's Crew a room aboard, something that cannot be turned down; however one can request a room change, up or down, though changing up is significantly easier. The SCC further collects rent from the Horizon's Crew in order to pay for the continual maintenance of the Horizon's Residential Deck, this rent tends to automatically be taken out of an employees paycheck. This means every character has a room on the horizon and will pay rent. More about the specifics of the Horizon's Housing can be read about here.

Dormitories are the second most common type of room, used by the lower rungs of the crew, and are incredibly cheap. Characters working in occupations that are above described as Middling, or Struggling likely have a Dormitory.

Cubicles are the most common type of room aboard, resembling a studio apartment. Characters working in occupations that are above described as Alright likely have a Cubicle, though they are still affordable at a stretch to characters working in Middling Occupations.

Condominiums are two room apartments aboard the Horizon, and significantly more expensive than either Cubicles or Dormitories. Characters working in occupations that are above described as Well Off or above tend to have Condominiums, though couples and wealthy crew who aren't a part of the Horizon Command Team, such as Corporate Representatives, also often rent them.

'Corapt and Family Corpats are the biggest rooms the Horizon has on offer, and are insanely expensive to rent on a monthly basis. However even without the price tag, due to their size and limited number only members of the Horizon Command Team, or Consular Officers are allowed to rent Corpats and Family Corpats. Members of the Horizon Command team also receive some discounts on Family Corpats provided they have a family member aboard who is also employed on the Horizon.

Salaries and Wages

Salaries and wages are determined by the position an employee fulfils aboard the NSS Aurora. After Taxes

Wants and Needs

A character's salaries and wages are used to fulfil their wants and needs. This can range from spending a significant amount of their income on housing, entertainment, and even buying tickets to travel the Orion Spur through ferries and whatnot. This is on a monthly basis and does not need additional calculations. Obviously this is not an exhaustive list of all the things your character may wish to purchase, so if an item you think your character would have is not on this list, either find the nearest comparable item and make up a believable number.
